Sanitisers: The Heart of Hot Tub Water Care

Every hot tub requires a sanitiser — without exception. Sanitisers are essential for keeping your water clean, clear, and safe by preventing the growth of bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants. Even water that looks clear can contain unwanted microorganisms, so sanitising is key to a healthy spa experience.

The two most common sanitisers are chlorine and bromine, each with distinct benefits.

Chlorine

Chlorine is the most widely used hot tub sanitiser, valued for its fast-acting disinfecting power and cost-effectiveness.

It quickly eliminates bacteria and viruses, keeping your water safe and hygienic. While chlorine has a characteristic “pool” scent and may be slightly harsher on sensitive skin, it remains the go-to choice for users who want strong, immediate sanitising performance.

Bromine

Bromine is a gentler alternative that performs especially well in hot water environments. It provides the same effective sanitisation as chlorine but with a softer feel, milder scent, and less irritation for sensitive skin.

Because bromine remains stable for longer, it requires less frequent top-ups — making it an excellent option for those seeking lower maintenance and enhanced comfort.

Understanding pH: Keeping Water Balanced

pH measures how acidic or alkaline your hot tub water is, and maintaining the correct balance is essential for both comfort and equipment longevity.

Your hot tub’s pH should remain between 7.2 and 7.6.

1. If pH is too low (acidic), the water can irritate skin and eyes, corrode metal components, and shorten the lifespan of your spa parts.

2. If pH is too high (alkaline), water can become cloudy, form scale, and reduce the effectiveness of your sanitiser.

Regular testing keeps things simple — use pH Plus to raise pH or pH Minus to lower it. Balanced water keeps your spa comfortable, protects your investment, and helps your sanitiser work efficiently.

Non-Chlorine Shock: The Secret to Fresh Water

Non-chlorine shock is an oxidising treatment that keeps your water fresh and clear. It breaks down organic contaminants such as body oils, lotions, cosmetics, and sweat — things that traditional sanitisers may miss.

Use non-chlorine shock weekly or after periods of heavy use to enhance sanitiser performance, prevent cloudy water, and eliminate odours.

Simply add the product with the pumps running, leave the cover off briefly, and let it circulate. It’s compatible with both chlorine and bromine systems and allows you to enjoy your hot tub again soon after use.

Total Alkalinity: The Foundation of Water Balance

Total alkalinity (TA) acts as a stabiliser for your pH, preventing sudden fluctuations when adding chemicals or refilling your spa. The ideal range is 80–120 parts per million (ppm).

1. If TA is too low, pH can swing unpredictably, leading to corrosion or irritation.

2. If TA is too high, pH can become locked at the upper end, causing cloudy water or scale build-up.

Check total alkalinity regularly using test strips, and use a Total Alkalinity Increaser (TA Plus) if levels drop below the recommended range.

Keeping TA balanced makes water care easier, extends the life of your hot tub, and ensures consistently clear, comfortable water.
